Collective bargaining is the process that labor unions and employers use to reach agreement about term and conditions of employment.

Bargaining Process

The bargaining process can also address issues such as employee rights, managerial controls and benefits for retired union members.

 Steps of Bargaining Process

  • Preparation – choosing negotiation team and representative of both the union and employer.
  • Discussion – Both parties meet to set ground rules for the collective bargaining negotiation process.
  • Proposal – Both representatives make opening statements, outlining options and possible solutions to the issue at hand.
  • Bargaining – following proposals, the parties discuss potential compromises, bargaining to create an agreement that is acceptable to both parties. This becomes a draft agreement, which is not legally binding, but a steppingstone to coming to a final collective bargaining agreement.
  • Final Agreement – once an agreement is made between the parties, it must be put in writing, signed by the parties and put into effect.

Participation versus Involvement of Employees

Employees Participation

When employees work together to accomplish a common objective, this is referred to as employee participation. It is expected of every employee to contribute by coming up with suggestions. It offers a forum where staff members can offer suggestions to help finish the assignment. All employees contribute, regardless of their job title.

Involvement of Employees

Giving your staff the chance to participate in decision-making at work is the essence of employee involvement. In hierarchical organizations, where key decisions are made by senior management and employees are expected to carry them out, employee involvement is usually more difficult.

  3. Absolutely, I concur. The effectiveness of the psychological contract hinges on a harmonious relationship between employers and employees. While it's generally successful, challenges arise when some individuals undermine the essence of collaboration, notably within the context of Trade Unions. Your insight captures this dynamic well. Well-articulated!
